Earth Oven
When the lovely people at Hi Mama asked me to create a graphics package for a series with Tem Morrison, exploring hāngi and traditional earth ovens from around the world, I was immediately excited by the show’s creative possibilities—and it didn’t disappoint.
We wanted the titles to capture the warmth, texture and spirit of a real hāngi. However, the logistics of finding the right location, timing it with good weather and working within the budget made filming an actual hāngi impractical. So, we built our own miniature version instead.
We brought a large raised garden bed into the studio, filled it with soil and dug our own hāngi pit. With a small crew, plenty of creativity and a little VFX magic, we captured something special—and created a title sequence we could all be proud of.
